Fast Car

There

Pagod, walang tulog at walang kain, nagpasya akong magtricycle pabalik ng Litex Commonwealth.

i take back what i said. this is just a figment of my imagination. pareho kasi er type eh. kaya ganda pagpantasyahan.

"Going back to my first answer, its all about the attitude."

Encantadia (Act Two)

---

If there is something I learned about the new batch of guys joining our group, it is that you will feel their loyalty to Centurion/FireFox. From being challenged and later abandoned during our first run, he is now the undisputed leader of a very active thread in Guys4Men. He can block anyone who crosses his path, and can walk in places assured of an entourage behind his back. Things have indeed changed and as his long-time companion in the world of PLU cyberspace, I am happy that he finally found his place.

It was already 2 am. The biggest casualty during our liquor run was Bloiggster. Darwin fell as well. Good thing, there was a willing lap to catch his head. As Dabo slept in one corner and Luna Mystika was being looked after by Pinuno somewhere in the cottages downstairs, I realized that I was in an unfamiliar company. Good thing Tsupaeng was a great host and a master entertainer.

His stories would later change my way of seeing things.

Encantadia (Act One)

Ask me not where they got the name, but the group has been expanding since Pinuno created a new thread late last year.

This new expansion brought new faces. Some were interesting, while many would just come and leave when their intentions did not mix well with the aims of the group. In PLU Group Dynamics, the biggest threat to any Barkadahan is the Kariran. The Outsiders had to leave PEx behind when we felt that the group was being ripped apart by newcomers, who often ended up being an eye-candy or the cannon-fodder of some older members. The Alliance remains a small and informal community of PLU bloggers. Whatever turbulence we have as a group remains isolated and easy to overlook with each successful reunion. Meanwhile, the core of the Tripper's Clan immediately realized how convenient it is to manage a tight and very exclusive clique to further its aims. It may not have the ancient brotherhood of the Outsiders, or the loose bond of the Alliance, but you can see in the eyes of each member how every group activity leaves them looking forward for the coming one.

The dynamics of Encantadia is very different. It began as a kariran group during its earliest reincarnation. Its first grand eyeball triggered a split between the core and what kept it steady through the fractious months was its regular Tagayan sessions in Quatro and DB Bar. Those who stayed behind waded through the division by recruiting new members until the core had its complete reunification last December. As for the new members, many of them have moved on for one reason or another. Those who faithfully remained were the first comers - the ones who witnessed my arrival in the thread after first meeting the Diwata two years ago.

The continuous movement of people made me cynic about how the group runs these days. The rookies I met last January were no more. In their places were the ones the core had an inuman a few weeks ago. Since my absence prevented me from meeting these guys last time, (for I was in another social function that night) I decided to remain distant until the new ones were able to blend with the group. It was my stand even when it was Darwin who put up a swimming party for Encantadia. Had it not for my bigger objectives I set early this month, my presence during the welcome inuman for Bloiggster when his plane landed from Cebu last Friday would already suffice.

However, I realized the importance of this event after some deep reflections. First is that it was a Despedida get-together for a friend who is leaving abroad. Our relationship may not be close, but he is one of the core members of the group. Second is that Darwin rarely organize activities for Encantadia. To put down his passion without any consideration is something I may regret in the days to come. Finally, two invited guys only agreed to show up if I would come as well. Though they may do so in their own accord, still it would be easier to convince their presence if I throw my hat in support.

So I said yes to the swimming party even if I would lose a week's clubbing moment in Malate.

---

My shift was over by 5 pm. The two other guys invited were Dabo and Lukayo. We all agreed to meet at the Alliance Headquarters, which is a ride away from the office. Barely slept and barely eaten, it was certain that I would most likely power down even before the inuman starts later that night.

We left an hour later to rendezvous with the rest of the gang in Cubao. Uncertain of the provisions brought by Darwin's group, we decided to procure our own supplies. Lukayo parked his car in front of KFC and then we went to Shopwise to buy bottles of mineral water and chips in case we run out of food at the resort.

It was already past 7 in the evening when everyone showed up. It would be a long trip going to Antipolo so we left even without getting introduced to the others who arrived.

---

The Gisele Bündchen Ipanema Experience

The guys who read my blog regularly know that I'm very bobo when it comes to fashion. I don't even know what Chuck Taylors are or the difference between a Boot Cut and Skinny Jeans. I own a pair of rubber shoes which I bought from Fila three weeks ago at 70% discount. The other footwear I have at my disposal were hand-me-downs from cousins abroad.

I sometimes even walk barefoot at home.

So imagine my surprise when I was invited to this Flip Flops launching event at Le Souffle last night. It's like WOW! I get to dine in a fancy restaurant for FREE, and get to see a runway and fashion show up close without being dragged by the security out of the room.

It's all thanks to Mugenblog, which is somewhat getting more attention lately.

The footwear launching event was a blogger affair attended by prominent Bloggers from around the city. Known as the Ipanema Seeds Collection Launching, the flip flop brand introduces a new line of high-end tsinelas which is promoted, designed and worn by Gisele Bündchen herself. You ask me who Gisele Bündchen is and my immediate answer be "she's a fashion model!" and that's it. But if you ask Miss Lyka Bergen who this fashion model is and I'm sure he will tell you her family history and even the list of brands she modeled for during her entire career.

I don't know much about flip-flops. The ready-to-fling one I have was bought by my mom at the supermarket. I laugh at people who goes gaga over Havaianas, Grendha and Flojos. However, when I was thinking earlier how to set Ipanema apart from the other flip flops in the kikay department, one thing came to mind.

If I can spend my money on footwear, why not spend it on flops that promote the environment?

Yes my dear friends! That is basically the main thrust of the Gisele Bündchen Seeds Collection. The line actually gives part of its earnings to the Haribon Foundation for its drive to restore the dwindling rain forests in the country. Since my advocacy is focused on the environment, I say "bring it on papi!" I don't mind getting an Ipanema this summer for my first attempt to accessorize so long as something good for the planet will come out of my pimping.

So that's it guys. The event is a first for my blog and I hope to feature more brands in the coming entries. Don't be surprised if I start modeling as well. Haha. And before I forget, I have something for sweet pea, who should have been there at the launching with me.

The Messenger and The Bench Boy

It is in the happiness of others that I find my own euphoria.

Twitter Entry, 8:45 PM

---

Entering the clothing store, you passed in front of us on your way to the exit. It was past seven in the evening and it is time for your break. Looking at your boyish face, my friend was right. You were infinitely handsome than all the store assistants we found at that Bench branch.

Standing at around 5'7, your semikal hair, fair skin features and high bridged nose are things you should be proud of. You are an absolute head-turner; a demigod one would love to stare at until your store closes for the night. If not for the sacred mission to emancipate a friend from his past heartbreaks, I'd find myself giggling in one corner after leaving me stunned with your shining passing. However, my presence has a lofty purpose. It might be my well-fortified pride on the line, but I'd give up whatever self respect I have for someone who truly deserves to be happy.

You can look at my friend and think of him as a geek. He is lean, he wears eyeglasses and he acts more flamboyant than I do. I would be his Goliath when we are placed next to each other. I would always be seen as his bodyguard whenever we go out together. Despite his frail appearance, I never doubted his ability to win someone's heart. He could win yours if ever you will give him a chance. After all, I think you are straight and you need someone like us to look after you.

So I am laying down my cards in an attempt for the two of you to get to know each other.

It is our second attempt to reach you. The first one failed when we learned that it was your off the day we showed up at your store. We went home empty handed - except for my friend who bought a speaker stand out of frustration. I was determined to succeed in this goal that I laughed after our first slump. I do not know the reasons for helping but I know it would make me complete.

And so we let you take your break while we gathered strength at the nearby Tokyo Cafe. My companion urges me to eat, while he dined on pasta and grilled chicken. He said it was his treat, but I insisted that dinner's waiting at home. I conceded by accepting his Peach Crêpe offering. At the back of my head however, it was you I am thinking of. You should be at my seat dining with him instead of me.

We returned to your store a few minutes later. We saw you carefully folding the loose clothes near the entrance like your life depends on their eye-catching arrangement. My friend ran away the moment he saw you. He was afraid that a stud like you might turn down his friendship.

We sat on one of the benches outside the mall. I had to coddle him until he was convinced that nothing would be lost no matter what the outcome is. What he needed was reassurance, a fall back plan if things would never work. After much prodding, we went back to close our journey. We entered the store with a carefully choreographed steps so we would know where to find each other.

I took a piece of paper from my pocket.

Written in that parchement was my friend's number and a short message offering his hand of friendship. I placed it carefully between my fingers as I roamed around the store waiting for the right timing.

"For all the troubles I've given to those who mattered, I will even out the deal by giving something back in return." I murmered to myself while feeling my chest throb faster.

---

Earlier that evening, I told my friend some instructions as to the things he should do while I perform my quest. It was an easy task really so long as he would not chicken out like what he did during our first attempt:

First is to enter the store together and make sure Bench boy would see us both.

Second is for him to proceed to the men's wear area to look for something to buy. It would distract the other store attendants who knew him stalking Bench boy since last month.

Third is I stay near Bench boy to find something for myself. My friend should never approach me as I attempt to get the golden boy's attention. The goal really is to seek his assistance and win his confidence before I deliver the message.

Finally, we buy something and make sure Bench boy notices my friend's gift bag. It might be our first and last attempt so better show our best than regret our shortcomings when things fail after.

I found my target still folding the loose clothes a few steps away from the exit. I roamed around the store pretending to fit the T-shirts that I would never buy even if my friend offers his credit card to purchase it. The nearest rack from him is where the hair wax, perfumes and other toiletries are displayed. The hair wax is the cheapest product they were selling so I grabbed one and then walked slowly towards his spot.

I tapped Bench boy's back which made him turn his head to assist me. With the confidence I show in dance clubs, I asked him if the hair wax on my hand is the strongest hold they have. Being partially deaf, he did not understand my question. Instead, he sought a colleague to assist with my inquiry. After repeatedly asking the same question, they both nod in affirmation.

Yes, what I have is the strongest hold they got.

What I have in my pocket is the strongest wording of liking only he would get.

Before he could return to folding the loose clothes, I tapped him again to finally deliver the message. Extending my shaking hand to give him the letter, all I could utter was;

"someone wants to be your friend."

He was deaf so he did not understand what I said.

Despite the confusion, Bench Boy took the paper from my hand and read its contents partially exposed between the folds. His face hid its reaction but nevertheless, accepted the letter and inserted it at one of his back pockets.

I returned to my friend who is at the counter paying for the slacks he just bought. We were silent all throughout the ordeal while Mister Bench Boy returned to arranging the shirts on the display rack like nothing ever happened.

Leaving the store, I tapped the Bench Boy for one last time. If only I could tell him what my personal message was:

"He will take care of you, even if it's just friendship you could offer."

He looked at me as I lift my thumb finger for reassurance. He nod in acknowledgement. My friend who was walking in front was not aware of it, but even during our last seconds inside the store, I was trying to sell him to the guy he really likes.

I just hope it wasn't me I mistakenly sold.

We walked towards the atrium to catch our breath. As I turn around to look at Bench Boy, I saw him with his charming eyes aimed at us.

Foghorn

The ascent begins at the base, near the picnic grove overlooking the famed lake. It will be a two-mile trip to the summit where thick clouds marching from the south have assembled to surround the prominent peak. The heaving dark clouds, like a dragon coiling around the hill is posed to swallow the crown on top of the mount, and we, as curious spectators is about to venture into the most outrageous drive of our lives.

Darkness shrouds the landscape as the Jimny revs for a steep climb. The narrow road twists revealing sharp bends whose deep ravine have already surrendered to the abyss. On cloudless days, the ledge reveals rolling hills and plains as far as the eyes could see. In the distance, beyond the lake, is the shimmering splendor of the sea, whose briny air beckons the marauding clouds to return to its depths.

But the path now, whose faint yellow divider lines is slowly fading into the fog. The silhouette of trees warn of an impending fall; the absence of specter of lights glowing from blurred lamp posts tell of yielding. Yet we must go on and never stop, lest a vehicle sharply turning on a bend might suddenly hit us from behind.

Sliding the side window, fluffy white smoke enters the car: the fog dancing gleefully to announce its victory to us. A whiff of icy air chills our nostrils, while pearly beads of rain water splat on our skin. The road ahead is now veiled behind the clouds but despite these trepidations, we crawl forward to continue our journey.

Halfway between the base and the summit, we parked, took a leak next to the ridge, and surveyed the hidden layers of our surroundings. Howling winds blow against our face as we stood our ground hoping for a heavenly parting to happen. An icy chill permeates our skin knocking our bones to submission, yet we never faltered: A crown seeks to be discovered hidden above the clouds.

We walked towards the final gate only to find it bolted. The wind is still howling and as the clouds encircle to make its final push to swallow our sanctified ledge, there is no choice but to rescind. With no place to stay and only the frosty elements to keep us company. We return to the Jimny and surrender our fate to the embracing mist.

Ridge Racer

Parked precariously beside a ridge somewhere along Sumulong Highway, the Red Mazda 3 bears witness to a promise. Seated in the front seat, I was just steps away from a steep drop below. Despite the seemingly precarious state I found myself in, the risk was well worth it.

In front of me was a panoramic view of Manila - sleeping yet sparkling under the sheets of a cold night. Rows upon rows of houses were twinkling below, while beyond, were glittering concrete skyscrapers silhouetted in the dark. Looking at the patterns of light - of roads and highways lit by lamp posts; of homes illuminated by tiny light bulbs perched on garages and front doors, one would see a web of interconnection. The lights reveal that everything under the same night sky fears being mislead by the darkness.

My heart was racing when I first set my gaze into the horizon . The person who accompanied me there may not have noticed it, but for a few seconds I had some difficulty catching my breath. "I've waited nine years for this," I sighed while fixing my gaze towards the direction of Ortigas. Suddenly, I felt the slow but continuous trickling of memories filling my head. At first, all I could remember were random images - blurry and difficult to recall. However, as I look farther into the city while listening to the humming of the wind and the chorus of insects gathered near the trees, everything became clearer to me.

The quiet recollection was interrupted by passing dump trucks moving at a crawling but roaring pace. They are heading to the quarries behind the hills. Occasionally, Patok jeepneys bound for Simbahan scurried behind us. They carried a handful of passengers, drunk and weary from the toils of work. Back in high school, the Patoks were stuff of legends. They were a perfect conversation piece whose notoriety in zigzagging along narrow stretches of Aurora Boulevard bore a stamp of experience. For us juveniles, to hitch a ride outside the jeep and endure the dizzying trip from Santa Mesa to Cogeo without clutching on the estribo was a rite of passage before gaining manhood.

I entered college still basking at the borders of my teenage existence.

A few sojourners on motorcycles made a brief stop-over near where the Mazda was parked. For fifteen minutes or so, they stood there enjoying the grand view of the city below. However, their loud and careless chatter interrupted my moment of nostalgia. I cannot remember what they spoke but as they begin to mount their bikes and continue their joyride, a flashback occurred to me.

Their voices echoed the slurry sounds I heard the first time I went to that place.

It was past midnight on a Saturday night. After a very lengthy party meeting at the university, we found ourselves in a convoy of vehicles heading toward the direction of Antipolo. I was in the company of students - scheming, political, and yet despite their manipulative inclinations within the party, they were leaders willing to serve for the good of the studentry. In those days, we were torn by inner strife between two rival philosophies. One was more transparent and democratic, and the other was close to being Orwellian. Searching for ways to unite the party, we found ourselves gazing towards the city lights while the same serene darkness surrounded us. Daybreak came but we never found the glow that would make us whole again. Yet, despite our bitter division, we were the office holders of the college student council for the next two years.

For some reasons, the same ridge became a testament to my dreams. I attempted to conquer my fears of driving just to be in that place with the one I will invite to keep me company. The thought of embracing the chilly silence, with only the same distant shimmering lights to bear witness to our moment of connection was the ultimate Emo moment I could imagine.

Nine years and I am still searching for that sense of connectivity.

And I still need to earn my driver's license.

But last night, it felt like the connection was almost there.

The brief respite took only an hour before reality sets in. Mom was insisting that I return home. My companion has work the following morning, and I, must detach myself from gazing too much at the distant skyscrapers because the longer I set my eyes on them, the more I am being reminded of how far the lights are,

and that some lights can never be mine.

"Tara, lets go home."

The key was turned on and the engine starts to rev. As the Mazda makes a U-turn to head back to the valley, I refused to turn my head and look back at the ridge we just left.

"There will always be a next time to dream and remember," I told myself. "What matters is that I never forget."

I arrived home safe, and slightly more hopeful of the future.

High

It all began with a video footage on Bandila two nights ago.

While everyone at home waited for any news about the high-profile drama surrounding the Alabang Boys and their busted drug syndicate, news about the Feast of the Black Nazarene splashed on the TV Screen. It was an anti-climactic turnaround of events especially for me, whose longing for real-time drama revealed how monotonous my choice of programming is late at night. The news spoke of preparations being done by the local city government of Manila for the expected deluge of devotees for the procession. It was also reported in the news that many devotees actually spend the night at the Basilica to welcome the massive statue as it is being pulled away from the altar towards the plaza and into the streets of Quiapo, where the flock scrambles to rub their towels and handkerchiefs on the icon.

The news about the all-night vigil stirred my curiosity. The thought of being with a group of pilgrims clad in Maroon who walked bare-footed going to the Basilica while carrying small statues of the Black Nazarene did not escape my thirst for something extraordinary. It may not be as thrilling as the Alabang Boys Scandal, but it is an excuse to be in Quiapo during the ungodly hour of the night.

I could just imagine the things I would find out as I join the devotees out there.

It was past midnight when I left the gym. Tired and exhausted from a heavy work-out, heading home to get some rest was an easy choice. However, the Feast of the Black Nazarene is a once-in-a-year event. I may not be given a chance to witness it the next time it happens. Icy raindrops continued to pour down as I waited for a jeep that will take me to Quiapo. The heaving skies implied that my pilgrimage would not be as easy as I hope it would be. Inside my head, I see images of people all over the city converging around the Basilica. Frosty drizzles may dampen their huddled bodies but it will never drench their pious spirit.

However, it was not the image that greeted me when I arrived in Quiapo half an hour later. What I saw was a gay pageant being held on a rickety platform just a few streets across the Basilica. The Maranao traders may have retreated back to their tiny pigeon holes but it was the homeless who crouched in fetal position as they slept on mats splayed across the deserted pavement.

These depressing scenes did not stop me from pushing towards my destination. When I emerged from the sleepy side of the Lacson Underpass, throngs of people approached me from all sides. They were traders selling icons, religious booklets, scapulars and even handkerchiefs with the image of the Poon imprinted on both sides. Flames remained ablaze on several stalls, whose trade is to sell a bundle of candles in different colors for well-wishers to burn. The sight was quite disappointing; for I see these images every time I pass by the Basilica. It was the human drama I wished to see in that place. Unfortunately, everything was as mundane as the last time I found myself there.

As I think of ways to make the most out of my time outside the Church, I mingled with the vendors whose lives have been interwoven with the affairs of the Nazareno. Most of them were resentful after the new parish priest decreed that the celebrations should be done at Luneta instead. They were expecting the traditions to go on - despite the yearly casualties that sometimes take lives during the procession. Much as I wanted to welcome the changes initiated by the Basilica authorities, I cannot help but consider how the break in tradition would affect the essence of the festivities.

Something will be lost and it would most likely be the spirit of the occasion.

The chit-chat went on until a minor skirmish between two vendors broke out on the other side of the plaza. Fearing that a riot might erupt anytime soon, I sought refuge inside the Basilica. There I found the devotees seated next to each other on pews and on the floor while doing their personal acts of veneration towards the Nazareno.

I walked past aisles, but there was no seat available. The pews were occupied by children soundly asleep while their adult companions fanned themselves as they stared blankly at the altar. Meanwhile, the old folks, whose timeless tradition they hold to even at the twilight years of their lives offer a glimpse of what human continuity could achieve: Decades from now, it would be their children who would be kneeling and clutching their rosaries, while their children's children would be the one sleeping on those same nearly-immortal pews.

I sat near the lectern and turned my head towards the pious parishioners facing me. They were the ordinary folks - the Masa crowd who often flock the Basilica during ordinary days. They were not the rich and middle-class parishioners who pay a visit at my favorite convent in Katipunan to write prayers on a piece of paper and then offer a basket of eggs to tempt the heavens to grant their supplications.

Unzipping my bag, I took out the rosary, the prayer booklet and the Bible which I bring wherever I go. The past twelve months have been transforming that I learned to keep my peace not by going to parties or engaging myself in sexual affairs, or engaging learned people about the values of our generation. I found serenity in reciting prayers passed on to me by my mother when I was still a kid. It is faith that holds me in place and whenever I find myself in a house of prayer, I take every opportunity to get in touch with my spirituality no matter what other people would think.

My fingers began to feel the wooden beads despite having no prayer intentions in mind. As I looked around for one last time before shutting my thoughts and turning myself inwards, what I still see were faceless people seating, kneeling and praying in front of me.

Bible passages were read, as each succeeding sorrowful mysteries drew me closer to that self fulfillment I seek. As the last of the Holy Mary's were being recited, I knew that my journey was coming to an end. This Pilgrimage will go down as one of the highs of this year. After doing the sign of the cross, I picked my bag and left the Basilica without ever getting noticed. Devotees were still coming in, while outside, traders braved the unbearable freezing temperature to sell trinkets that would remind non-believers of how profitable religion is.

It was time to go home. The Pilgrimage had restored my faith. It doesn't matter if the Nazareno truly answers prayers or heal the sick; I already have my goals. However, it seems like the Source was not over with me yet. Something is about to unfold and it would truly make my expedition as spiritual as it could be.

I remember reading a passage in the Book of Matthew while reciting my prayers earlier. It speaks of the messiah telling his listeners about his father wanting not sacrifices to offer but kindness for all his creations. For some reasons I made a mental note of that passage, only to find out what it truly meant while walking pass snoozing bystanders slumbering beneath the cold, lonely underpass.

As I was about to climb the steep flight of stairs leading to Hidalgo Street, a young woman clutching an infant approached me. She was asking for spare change. Feeling the contents of my pocket, what I found was a bunch of coins worth eight pesos. It was all the money I have left. I knew it wasn't enough for the lady and her infant. To apologize or pretend that I did not hear anything was an easy choice. However, coming from a very personal communion with the almighty, leaving her ignored and abandoned will take away the essence of my journey.

On my right hand was a half-filled bottle of Cobra Energy Drink I bought from a convenience store not far from the Basilica. It was the only thing I could offer. Extending my hand, I asked if she would like to have my drink instead. Without hesitation she smiled and took the bottle away like a thirsty wayfarer taking a break from a long and difficult trek she had to overcome. Her acceptance gave me a sense of relief. "Finally a good deed done after receiving the good news," I told myself. As I bowed to the lady before I left, a moment's glimpse suddenly blurred my vision.

It felt like the encounter sums up everything I did in Quiapo.

The devotees may spend a day and a night reciting the most poetic words to venerate their icons. They can form a line as far as the eyes could see just to wipe a statue whose miracles according to legends could bring fortune and healing to the sick. The Feast of the Nazarene is a religious event for those who believe and those who wish to believe.

I recall the beginnings of my journey towards the end of it; when a lady carrying a child approached me begging for alms. I responded not by offering food or money but by giving her my drink. In that small act, I discovered that the fulfillment I seek was not inside the Basilica or in the wooden beads which my fingers run for almost an hour.

Hours after arriving home, the smile on that thirsty lady's face remains deeply embedded on my head. Words were never spoken, but when our hands held together the plastic bottle I was giving her, it was almost like meeting the lady and the child whose image appears in front of my prayer booklet.

And whose assurances I sought when prayers were spoken from my lips.

When our hands held close, it was the only time I truly felt complete.

Illumination

"Opo, alaga niyo yung pusa diba?"

Roadtrip

Counting Blue Cars

And yet,
I am willing to run to the ends of the earth
just to be with that one soul;
that one stellar beacon
who somehow speaks and understands my secret language.

Even in its eccentric and temporal orbit,
his planetary gravitational pull holds my tin-can satellite

from drifting aimlessly towards the
coldness of empty space.

Must have been late afternoon
On our way the sun broke free of the clouds
We count only blue cars
Skip the cracks in the street
And ask many questions like children often do...

We said.

Riverside

And when I return to that same spot by the river at exactly the same time the sun is about to set; when I sit on the pavement where we both rested our weary feet and made a pact for tomorrow; when the sky turns pale blue and the river's currents carry the wandering lotuses toward the sea,

there and then, alone and by myself,

will I hear our voices being echoed by the same water ripples that will forever resonate our memory.

I swear, this is out of the ordinary.

--

"Ano kayang feeling na maglakad diyan?" He was pointing at the abandoned Sugar Refinery across the river. "May mga mumu kaya diyan?"

"Balang araw ay magiging extension rin yan ng Rockwell," pointing out at the same abandoned refinery. "Magtatayo sila ng tulay sa ilog." I replied a little later.

--

"Would you believe that no sunsets are alike?"

"Ano yun parang kidlat, it doesn't strike twice?"

"Lightning can strike twice kala mo ba?"

--

Though the conversation started the moment I saw him waiting outside the lobby of the building, I couldn't exactly recall now (while writing this) what were our topic or topics during those time we were near the river. There were moment of silence, of course.

Window Shopping

The mall beckons, attracting day-dreamers to discover its hidden wonders. A narrow bend extending up to the other end, what awaits the seeker are dozens of boutiques from top-brand clothing to high-tech gadgets found on the opposite sides of the corridor. Visitors come and go to gape at what's on display behind the glass mirror: A flat-screen high-definition television whose price tag is worth a fast-food crew's income for one year; A blue and yellow striped cotton shirt with a Crocodile logo worn by a Grey mannequin, whose plastic head has been severed from its ripped torso; A jeweled bag sewn with synthetic rhinestones and swarovski crystals on its leathery skin, it glistens like diamonds when illuminated by display lamps hung from the ceiling.

Some brave souls wake up from their day-dream by claiming these modern-day treasures as theirs. What is required is just a plastic card that will be swiped, slashed and signed in front of an attendant whose ear-wide smile has been plastered over her jaded face. "Another sale, another commission," her mind exclaims.

Day-in, day-out this is the life in the mall. Many do find its spectacle quite pleasing to the senses. I know someone who can spend three hours walking around its premises to try some items on display as if he's ready to buy them. He would fit a pair of slacks and check it out in front of the mirror. After he is satisfied with what he has seen, he would take it off and return it to the waiting saleslady, whose marks of frustration clearly shows on her face. Embarrassed at the sight of an attendant whose time has been wasted, I would storm out of the boutique with a confused companion running after me.

From then on, malling ceased to be an activity I would spend my time with.

I do not understand why some people find enjoyment roaming around malls for hours without buying anything at all. They say it's window shopping, but for me it is called self-inflicted pain. There is no fulfillment feeling and fitting a gorgeous piece of clothing that you cannot afford - unless you are trying different designs from where you would choose your purchase. Malls are places of agony, that's what I bear in mind when I enter its premises. Many people go there to dream of a tomorrow where they can afford anything their heart desires. What is so sad about dreaming though is that the more you are able to wake up to buy something, the more dreams invade your thoughts. Materialistic desires are wanting and once you become hook-up to the habit, there will be no limits to your spending.

Pardon, for this is what I've seen in my past life.

So I only go to the mall when I am intent on buying something. Often, I would drop by a store, pick up an item and then proceed to the cashier. To stay longer and get distracted by the items on display would just lead to frustration...

...because I know that I could afford whatever I want to pick. I could pay them. It is only my head that tells me never to dream of tomorrow. Somehow, my mother's age-old rule on spending for what is only necessary still ranks high among my core values.

So I've grown to become less dependent on material happiness, and instead find appreciation on what is already mine. For years, the malls have reminded me of that companion who would explore its secrets and call it his second home. I tried my best to never to dream and instead remain awake at the reality that I can never afford,

because the moment I could already afford, chances are, I would still never give up my hard-earned money.

That was my belief until this night.

Reborn to a new life, I accompanied a friend from Pinoyexchange to explore the hidden chambers of Greenbelt Makati. The boutiques we entered were too high-end for my taste, I consider them decadence. Who in the right mind would buy a plain white shirt for P2,000 pesos when you can get something else for an eighth of its price? Why spend on an extravagant piece of sculpture from Firma, when you can buy a more extravagant one - in Divisoria at a quarter of its price?

I would have ranted more at the obscene things I have seen except for one thing:

While checking the tag price of a Sony Bravia flat screen TV in one of the boutiques inside the mall, a vision appeared inside my head.

I saw myself standing inside a pad with white-washed walls. Four LED lamps illuminate the room where a black leather sofa leaned against a wall. There is a kitchen on the right, a rounded dining table near the door going out of the unit and a small bedroom close to the floor-to-ceiling window. Beyond the window is a view of Antipolo and Marikina, whose soft lights from thousands of houses twinkle like stars in the dead of the night.

There, placed against the wall between the living room and the bedroom is the Sony Bravia that my hands were feeling at the moment of dreaming.

Closing my eyes, and seeing once more the vision of a home that existed only in my head;

A home I began to dream again after five years of forgetting,

Yeah... this is what my new-found freedom had given me.

I tell myself over and over.

Someday, the flat screen TV will be mine.
